A Fabric Guide for Every Occasion

Fabric is the part of fashion that fashion culture most consistently ignores. We talk about silhouette, colour, brand, trend — but the thing that most determines how a garment feels to wear, how it drapes, how long it lasts, is what it is made from.

A silk charmeuse blouse moves differently from a washed satin. Both look similar in a photograph. In person, one falls like water and one catches the light stiffly.

The fundamentals worth knowing: natural fibres breathe. Linen wrinkles but recovers. Wool regulates temperature. Cashmere pills unless it is made well. Silk is not precious — it is washable and durable when handled correctly.

Synthetics are not inherently inferior. A well-constructed ponte knit holds its shape better than a cheap cotton jersey. The question is always: what is this fabric doing here, and is it doing it well?
